Paul Helsinki (gunsamerica) is a Wannabe Internet Media Professional

I had chosen to generally avoid commenting on the idiotic statements Paul Helsinki made on NSSF’s SHOT Show blog, hoping to give the guy a chance to refute what he said (we all say dumb things sometimes). Unfortunately, Paul Helsinki has failed at the internet. And, it turns out the guy is a misogynist too. You see, Paul Helsinki doesn’t like small-time bloggers taking up his precious space at SHOT Show. As the exact kind of small-time blogger this elitest douche was referring to, I feel qualified to respond.

There’s a reason why print media is being marginalized by bloggers. The fact is, the print media world is dying. Even trusted magazines like American Rifleman won’t publish negative reviews. Most bloggers don’t have to answer to advertisers. Most can say whatever they want without fear of repercussion. Advertisements do not pay my bills and I do not have to answer to anyone. I can publish honest opinions all day long without fear of losing my job, advertisers, readers, etc.

I had never heard of Paul’s company before (anyone comfortable speaking on behalf of an entire company must own it, right?), but rest assured I will avoid it indefinitely. You see, Paul is the exact person that he is lobbying to have disqualified from attendance at SHOT Show. His company (gunsamerica) is a low-rent wannabe version of GunBroker, which is a firearm-themed version of eBay. And if it wasn’t for my having to look it up on the internet, I wouldn’t even know they had a blog.

As a consumer-to-consumer auction brokerage, his company has little to no reason to attend SHOT Show at all. Seeing as it is a hunting, shooting, and firearm industry trade show, it primarily functions to introduce media representatives to new products. But a retail auction site does not function as a media representative. This means the success of his company is irrelevant. We must now judge his relevance solely on his blog. Seeing as I follow a number of great gun blogs, I guess I must have been living under a rock for the last “15 years” of his “hardwork and dedication”.

Here’s another “ranking” site that offers a look into the category of gun blogs. Funny thing is, I don’t see Paul Helsinki’s blog anywhere on that list. Hopefully Paul won’t be subject to the same standards he lobbies the NSSF to adopt to “vet” out “nobodies”. I’m sorry Mr. Helsinki, but you’re not a “media professional”, you’re just an asshole.

Thanks for all the links! Unfortunately, your last sentence sums up the situation precisely; Helinski and his staff have violated the cardinal rule of “don’t be a dick”, and, sadly, by association, their idiotic actions are coloring the entire firearm-owning and -selling community.
